CHAPTER NINE

After letting me down so unexpectedly the night of my birthday, Camille had sent me more daily text messages than ever. And since being upset did nothing for my performance, I chalked the whole experience up as something that I would probably have to get used to if I wanted to be with a woman like her. I never did get an explanation and after a few weeks, it was just another thing to put behind us. I never asked Camille when she planned on visiting me again because I didn't want to get my hopes up like the last time. I had to trust that if she got the chance to see me, she would take it but knew it would probably happen on a moments notice if at all.

With the second term well underway, the crux of the semester was upon me and I had to fight hard against the feeling that all of my hard work would end up being for nothing. I had received hopeful, but not perfect marks on my midterm exams and dean Shepard assured me that I was in the top tier of students who had applied for the internship.

My original impression of dean Shepard, it turned out, had been accurate. He was an infinitely kind-hearted man that took a deep interest in me reaching my goal. As cordial as dean Hollander and I had become, he would always be a guy caught with his pants down. Adelle Fischer, the Finance Professor, had proven to be an excellent teacher but remembering her on her knees was always a bit of a distraction in class. I could never understand her attraction to the dean since she was quite beautiful and sexy and he…well, he wasn't.

I was studying in the library during the lunch break one afternoon before finals and Molly came up behind me. I always knew when Molly was behind me for some reason. It was like there was a disturbance in the force or something.

"Hey, Claire," she said.

"Hey, Molly, " I said back.

"I have a favor to ask you," she began.

I felt uneasy about what her next words might be.

“I was wondering if you’d be willing to go over Finance with me before the final? It won't take long, maybe a couple of hours. I could really use the help." Her eyes showed her concern. Molly had missed a lot of classes and she never seemed to participate all that much. I knew she must be behind.

It would have been easier to turn her down if she’d asked me to do anything other than study. But since it was still technically studying, I didn't really have an out. She’d caught me at a weak moment. "Sure,” I said. “How about tomorrow night?"

Molly smiled from ear to ear. "Oh, my gosh, thank you so much, Claire. I might actually pass this exam!"

We set a time to meet at her place. I didn't want to bring her back to my apartment, even though it would have been a lot easier for me.
